Godowsky - The Pianists' Pianist

Godowsky: The Pianists' Pianist, the first study of this remarkable musician's life, is the result of ten years of research. It is written with the full cooperation of the Godowsky family who have given Jeremy Nicholas unprecedented access to their archives. Appearing for the first time in print is the one completed chapter of Godowsky's autobiography as well as many previously unpublished letters, documents and photographs.

Renowned as a wit and the generous host of countless soirées, esteemed as a teacher, philosopher and musical sage, Leopold Godowsky was held in awe and affection by his pianistic colleagues. Jeremy Nicholas examines the factors which, with the tragedy that abruptly ended his career, have contributed towards his unjust neglect.

Copious appendices include a catalogue of all of Godowsky's compositions (published and unpublished) plus the first complete discography and piano roll catalogue.

The biography was published in 1989.  There are also two double CDs of Godowsky's recordings available, sold separately, issued by APR to complement the book. Since then, well over 200 works by Godowsky have been recorded, two pianists are currently engaged (by two different record companies) on recording Godowsky's complete works, and for the first time since his death much of his music is readily available.

The book is 390 pages, including 16 pages of black and white photographs. It is published by Appian Publications and Recordings.  For more information, please contact them at
