Compositions

music sample Leopold Godowsky was a prolific composer with a catalog of several hundred works. Celebrated as a brilliant pianist during his lifetime, his legacy has been assured by his compositions. Godowsky composed almost exclusively for the piano, and his works for that instrument are considered masterpieces of the literature. They are notable for their full counterpoint, interwoven melodies, and the care with which they are designed to fit the hand.

Known more for his transcriptions than his original compositions, Godowsky's own works comprise different styles and levels of difficulty. Some of Godowsky's compositions justify his reputation as a writer of virtuosic music, but others are written for intermediate and even beginning pianists. More than any other composer, he wrote great works for the left hand alone. He is famous for his detailed fingerings, and many pianists have described a sense of physical pleasure in following them.

Unless otherwise noted, the pieces listed are for solo piano. Godowsky also composed for violin and piano, cello and piano, multiple pianos, and piano with voice.

Godowsky's career was interrupted by World War I, and due to this some of his works were lost. Of his surviving publications, a number of them are no longer in print. Fortunately, the increasing popularity of Godowsky's music has led to a reissue of numerous compositions, and many music libraries carry copies of the others. We are currently preparing instructions on how to find particular works. The general procedure is as follows: First, try your local library or a classical music store that is willing to place mail orders. Bear in mind that some of the works have been reissued with different publishers than are listed here. If that fails, you may contact the International Piano Archives at the University of Maryland (which has a nearly complete collection) or the Library of Congress.

Data for this section was obtained from "The Published Music of Leopold Godowsky" by Leonard Saxe (Music Library Association Notes, Vol. XIV, No. 2, March 1957).

Educational adaptations

"Godowsky's achievement is greater than that of the mere transcriber or arranger. He aimed higher and opened up new vistas for developing our pianistic mechanisms...When teachers, performers and students wake up to the possibilities and potentials of the Godowsky legacy, and when they apply themselves to its enormous challenge, we will begin once again to enjoy the music they make, to find recitals less of a duty and more of a joy to attend, and to share in the experience of expressivity through beautiful sounds produced with freedom and ease."
