Guide to Publishers

For readability, most of the publishers in the composition lists are represented as abbreviations. They may be translated as follows:

A. D. = A. Durand et Fils, Paris
A. P. S. = A. P. Schmidt, Boston
A. S. = Art Publication Society, St. Louis
C. F. = Carl Fischer, New York
E. A. = E. Aschenberg and Company, London
G. S. = G. Schirmer Inc., New York
H. K. = H. Kleber and Bros. Ltd., Pittsburgh
S. B. M. = Schlesinger'sche Buch-und Musikhandlung, Berlin

The publisher listed for a particular work is usually the original publisher, and may not correspond to the current publisher. We are in the process of preparing instructions on how to find particular works. The general procedure is as follows: First, try your local library or a classical music store that is willing to place mail orders. If that fails, you may contact the International Piano Archives at the University of Maryland (which has a nearly complete collection) or the Library of Congress.
