Godowsky was better known as a pianist than as a composer.  He had an active career as a performer and pedagogue that spanned over forty years.  In 1930 he suffered a stroke at a recording session in London that effectively ended his public performances.

Godowsky was considered by many of his peers to perform his best in private settings.  These are not available to us, but fortunately he left behind a substantial recorded legacy.  The critical survey provides a good introduction to Godowsky's recordings and their impact.  The recorded legacy gives a complete list of Godowsky recordings that have been issued.  It is up to date as of August, 1999.
