just for the record (as written in private msg): it appears that copyright is protected for 70 years initially, and then for another 40 years (?) when renewed.
I donīt know about international law, but in the UK and Germany, copyright only comes into play when you are planning a public performance. Private study / educational purposes not affected.

My experience with publishers is limited, but so far Iīve found the following:
- the big publishing houses are quite open to "small fry" when it comes to copies of the originals. For them itīs not worth their while, particularly with rare works
- if individual pieces are reasonably well known, the publishers get cagey (example: "Old Vienna" from Triakontameron) because they can sell these into collections which still does mean money.
