Hi a really polarizing discussion takes place here; I remember the time when the CDs of GDM were the only avilable complete ones, how glad I was, to listen to all of these pieces. Itīs touching, the attempt to "reveal" the probably Dante treatment of artists for explanations; the fact that the pieces were played by far toooooooo... slowly is undeniable; hard to believe, that anyone had cheated here (it would only make sense to have thes records accelerated). What I donīt understand: why is it a shame not to like a piece (as the sonata)? I think itīs not neccessary to play all pieces of a composer by one artist (have a look what all Liszt "composed" and most of these "gems" are recorded, 'Nationalhymne Kaiser Wilhelm' for example).
I remember the fact (when the enthusiasm subsided)that I started to count all the bars of the very 1st etude, combined the result with the MM instructions and all was told (my record for comparing purposes and the trigger to counting exercises was Bolet); from now on I used them for my glasses/cups (sufficient for a small family).
That the Dantes are unconventional shows the 2nd CD with MPonti playing Wagner paraphrases, where this CD lasts only ~20 min with 2 pieces.
This confirms me in my doubts about these concerning article.
Isnīt it imaginable that some artists find a piece isnīt good? Isnīt it their right to have an own estimation?
I like Richter, he dared to play only selected pieces from a work or a cycle, Iīm sure that he know why he did is his way!
Itīs better to have the major works played by an artist who likes the pieces, maybe there is anyone out there who is the "crack" for the sonata, enjoy if the time has come, if not, remember the cause for this discussion...
